OpenDNS Enterprise provide a low cost web-filtering solution which reduces malware incidents & controls employee internet access. It achieves this by using the DNS system, and uniquely requires no additional hardware or software.
The Domain Name System is the Internet service which translates human-friendly domain names, such as www.google.co.uk to computer-friendly IP addresses – such as 208.222.120.45, enabling people to visit websites without having to remember strings of numbers
OpenDNS Enterprise combines the DNS system with it’s own vast database of website categorisations, allowing companies to filter out undesirable and risky websites.
When a request is made for a specific website, the OpenDNS servers compares the request to their database, and either allows or denies access to the site, dependent on the administrators chosen filtering policy.
Web sites are categorised into 56 categories. This enables organisations to filter their users Internet access based on their custom needs. Individual sites can also be applied to a custom whitelist or blacklist – even on a per user basis.
Why does my organisation need web filtering?
-Blocking objectionable content.
Most organisations prefer to block Pornographic, Violent and Racist content. For many, such as schools and colleges, it may be a legal obligation.
-Dealing with timewasting
Businesses that want to minimise employee distractions can do so at the click of a mouse. Social networking, Gambling, Auction sites and Dating sites can be eliminated from the workplace.
-Conserving bandwidth.
Bandwidth can be an expensive resource, and its abuse can slow down legitimate applications. OpenDNS can block video sharing sites & file hosting sites, conserving bandwidth for work related purposes, and improving data security.
-Security
OpenDNS adds a complementary layer of security to the essential ‘firewall, anti virus & patching’ trinity – becoming the organisations first line of defence.
It helps to secure Internet access by blocking sites which are known to host malware or ‘phishing’ scams, drastically reducing the infections which are often missed by traditonal Antivirus products.
If a computer does become infected, OpenDNS blocks any DNS lookup to known botnets – minimising the risk of a computer being controlled remotely.
OpenDNS offers all of this – but uniquely delivers it all requiring no additional software or hardware; just some very simple configuration and a low cost annual subscription.
